North! To Alaska! Day 1

...so, we attached the U-haul to my Subaru, and packed it with our stuff. It was that easy. . . I wish. We were very creative in our packing schemes, still to leave a few things behind. We didn't actually start on our way until the afternoon of Sunday, August 24th. Then Stacy and I made it as far as Valentine for our first night to camp. By the time we staked out our site, and made it into town, it was 9 o'clock. We had to settle for a double cheeseburger and filet-o-fish, from McDonald's(the only establishment open for dining after 9 p.m. on Sundays). It was all we needed. Only three hours of driving, and it felt like we had been driving for days.
However, driving through the sandhills, and a little bit of a state forest proved to be worth it. The added bonus of a sunset on the plains will be not forgotten. It was a bittersweet feeling; a beautiful evening on the plains, worthy of a trip's ending, and ours was just beginning.
